Hysterosalpingo Contrast Sonography (HyCoSy) | Manchester Fertility

HyCoSy

A non-invasive transvaginal ultrasound technique which assesses the patency of your fallopian tubes.

Introduction

HyCoSy (Hysterosalpingo-contrast-sonography) is a fertility test offered by our sonography team at our state-of-the-art clinic. HyCoSy is a transvaginal ultrasound procedure which assesses the patency of your fallopian tubes, which must be clear of blockages in order to conceive.

Why have a HyCoSy test?

If you have trouble conceiving it is advisable to have a few fertility checks, we call this our fertility assessment. For women, this involves an AMH blood test, pelvic ultrasound scan to include an antral follicle count, and a general health check (including your BMI).

Sometimes, following these tests, it is necessary to carry out further investigations, including the HyCoSy tubal patency test.

A HyCoSy test plus a consultation with a fertility specialist, will help you make informed decisions and give you useful advice about how best to conceive.

What is the HyCoSy test procedure?

The HyCoSy test involves injecting a special contrast fluid into the uterine cavity via a thin catheter passed through the cervix. The fallopian tubes can then be assessed once the contrast fluid flows along the tubes towards the ovaries.

What causes blocked tubes?

Blocked fallopian tubes can be caused by a number of reasons, including infections, previous surgery and scar tissue. Blocked fallopian tubes do not typically show any symptoms and most women are unaware of a problem until they have difficulty conceiving.

Who performs the HyCoSy test?

One of our highly trained sonographers will carry out the HyCoSy test, which will normally take around 30 minutes.

Our team perform these procedures on a regular basis and will put you at ease to make your test as comfortable as possible.

Will there be any discomfort?

During the test you may feel some discomfort but this usually passes quickly. We recommend that you take some form of pain relief such as ibuprofen or paracetamol an hour before the procedure.

What does it cost?

HyCoSy is not part of our standard fertility assessment and has a stand-alone price of £580.
